Brevity is a Superpower

Don’t overthink it. Go straight to the point. Use simple words. Rinse, repeat!

Brevity will work wonders for you at the workplace, whether you are answering a question in person, composing an email, or delivering a presentation. People will use words like “concise, brief, and precise” to describe you, and that’s always a good thing.

When the V.P. of Marketing asks: “On average, how many of the monthly visits to our website convert into sales?” and you reply “On average, 3,500 visits convert into sales”, you’ll make her life so much easier, not to mention she’ll think “I like this person”.

One of the beauties of brevity it’s that reduces or eliminates altogether the possibility of a misunderstanding. It takes interpretation out of the equation. It means that if 3 individuals read your communication or listen to your speech, all three of them will arrive at the same conclusion.

Based on my experience, wordiness is not considered a virtue by any manager, business owner, or CEO. I remember this brainy guy who could never provide a short explanation. He would go on and on until reminded the clock was ticking. Again, he had multiple college degrees but his verbosity didn’t do a thing for his professional image.

If you happen to be a wordy individual, there are things you could do towards becoming a “to the point” kind of person: read articles, buy books, hire a coach or see a counselor. Your future self will greatly appreciate it! ☼
