Ideas alone won't get you anywhere if you lack the proper motivation
“The 1,000-Year Tangle©,” my first short story for all the family, is now available. Feel free to read it by scrolling down and clicking the “Read” button.
I’ve been carrying many ideas for books and short stories in my head for years and years, but I could never find the right reason to bring any of them to life. Below you'll find 3 things that helped me find the motivation to start showing who's boss to the wild ideas roaming inside my head.
Money is not always the best motivation
For the longest time, I thought about becoming a famous writer who was going to make a whole lot of money. But every time I thought about the book aisle in the dollar store, a place where many novels, thrillers, and biographies go to die, my enthusiasm for writing went out the window. At some point I realized we all come to this earth filled with stories, books, songs, and poems, to name a few, and it's an important part of our mission in life, to share with others the precious cargo we were trusted with. That was a huge shift in my writing mindset. It did free me from obsessing about the dollars and cents potential any of my writing ideas might have and allowed me to focus on what matters: putting them out there.
Don't take your ideas to the grave
A powerful message that shook me to the core the first time I heard it, in the voice of motivational speaker Les Brown, who in turn was quoting Dr. Howard Thurman:
"The ideal situation for a man or woman to die is to have family members standing with them as they cross over. But imagine, if you will, being on your deathbed, and standing around your bed are the ghosts of the ideas, the abilities, the talents, the gifts, and the dreams given to you by life. That you, for whatever reason, never pursued those dreams. You never did anything with those ideas. You never used those talents. You never used those gifts. You never took advantage of those opportunities. And there they are, standing around your bed, looking at you before you take your last dying breath, looking at you with angry eyes saying, 'We came to you, and only you could have given us life and now we must die with you forever.'" Now, I don't know when I'll be leaving this world, but I think I'll feel so much better if I am 3 books lighter when my time comes.
There is one person out there who will appreciate what you write
I remember watching a video from motivational speaker Mel Robbins, where she talks about the wise words from Braxton, his yoga instructor: “There is something inside of you, a life lesson, a story, wisdom, something that you are meant to share with the world. There’s something inside of you that somebody is searching for and your job is to find the courage to get out of your comfort zone and share your story and share your wisdom and show up in bigger ways.” Not a week goes by when I don't think about these wise words.
And now, without further ado, “The 1,000-Year Tangle©.”
